Sant”e“scalade is a health promotion initiative of the Escalade Running Association, the Athlética Center, the Geneva University Hospitals in collaboration with qualified dieticians and the participation of the members of the Geneva Stadium Athletics. The project is supported by the Gourgas Foundation, the State Sports Fund of Geneva, the Department of Public Education, Culture and Sport (DIP) and the Department of Regional Business, of the Economy and Health (DARES) under the “Walk and eat smart!” program (www.ge.ch/marchezetmangezmalin), supported by Health Promotion Switzerland.
This action is led by the eponymous association, santescalade, created in 2006 and composed of a committee of about ten volunteer members.
Aware of the problems related to obesity and inactivity, this committee set up, in 2007, this concept of information and awareness for children aged 6 to 12 in the Canton of Geneva and makes them aware of the importance of regular physical activity and a balanced diet.
The association’s activities also extend to seniors, for whom weekly walk and run training has been offered since 1999, the International Year of Older Persons.
In addition, since 1999, joint training sessions have been held every week, on the 7th Sunday morning before the weekend of the Escalade Race, thousands of participants, each time in a different commune of the region.
Finally, the concept santescalade extends since 2017, to adolescents between 12 and 15 years, in weekly sessions that promote regular physical activity.
Thanks to the invaluable support of the Canton and the City of Geneva, as well as the partner entities, all of these activities are totally free so that as many people as possible can participate.
