Sant”e“scalade is a health promotion initiative of the Escalade Running Association, the Athlética Centre and the Geneva University Hospitals in collaboration with qualified dieticians and the participation of members of the Geneva Stadium Athletics. The project is supported by the Gourgas Foundation, the State Sports Fund of Geneva, the Department of Public Education, Culture and Sport (DIP) and the Department of Regional Business, the Economy and Health (DARES) under the “Walk and eat smart!” program (www.ge.ch/marchezetmangezmalin), supported by Health Promotion Switzerland.
This action is led by the eponymous association, Santescalade, created in 2006 and consisting of a volunteer committee with about ten members.
Cognizant of the problems related to obesity and inactivity, this committee set up this information and awareness-raising concept for children aged 6 to 12 in the Canton of Geneva, in 2007, to raise their awareness around the importance of regular physical activity and a balanced diet.
The association has also extended its activities to seniors, since the International Year of Older Persons in 1999, by offering weekly walk and run training.
In addition, joint training sessions have been held every week, since 1999, for thousands of participants on the 7 Sunday mornings prior to the weekend of the Escalade Race, in a different community of the region each time.
Finally, the Santescalade concept was extended in 2017, to include adolescents between 12 and 15 years, with weekly sessions that promote regular physical activity. Thanks to the invaluable support of the Canton and the City of Geneva, along with partner entities, these activities are all totally free so that participation can be open to as many people as possible.
